IPL Photorejuvenation

IPL (intense pulsed light) photorejuvenation laser treatments are most commonly used for lightening, removing, and correcting sun spots, age spots, and brown blotches on the face, neck, chest, hands, and other areas of the body. This non-invasive procedure can also correct non-cancerous skin lesions, unsightly broken capillaries, uneven skin pigmentation, and wrinkles for a youthful, refreshed appearance.

Using a gentle intense pulsed light (IPL) laser treatment, photorejuvenation corrects age spots, broken capillaries, blotchy pigmentation, and wrinkles for a youthful, refreshed appearance. Photorejuvenation is only used on the damaged areas of your skin, sparing healthy skin. IPL treatment is a comfortable way to achieve smooth, radiant skin that others will notice.

At Iorio Plastic Surgery & Medspa, we recommend photorejuvenation as an ideal skin care treatment for patients with large pores, hyperpigmentation, sun-damaged skin, and red flushed faces.

What is photorejuvenation?

Photorejuvenation is a non-invasive advanced skin treatment that can erase damage on the skin’s surface, resulting in skin that looks younger and healthier. Photo rejuvenation can be helpful for treating skin imperfections such as fine wrinkles, freckles, age spots, non-cancerous lesions, and blemishes, as well as unsightly spots on the face, hands, chest, and neck. Photorejuvenation uses both a gel and a laser to deliver comfortable and effective treatment of the skin.

What are the benefits of photorejuvenation?

Photo rejuvenation stimulates the production of new collagen as the damaged tissue absorbs the light energy. As a result, your skin will begin to soften, smoothing wrinkles and lines and decreasing problematic redness.

How does photorejuvenation work?

Photo rejuvenation is a short in-office procedure that often lasts only 20 minutes or less. During photorejuvenation, Dr. Louis Iorio will first apply a gel to your skin. You’ll be given goggles to protect your eyes. A smooth light wand will be applied to your skin that delivers rapid impulses of a bright light. Though you usually will not feel any pain during a photo rejuvenation treatment, you may be offered an anesthetic cream if any discomfort does occur.

The laser/IPL device emits a range of light waves that are then tuned and targeted at hemoglobin (the red blood cells in the blood vessels) or melanin (the brown pigment in freckles and age spots). The light beam passes through the skin and is absorbed by either hemoglobin or melanin resulting in damage to the vessel wall or fragmenting of melanin pigment. These tiny vessels and the melanin pigment are then absorbed by the body, thus, making them less visible.

You do not need to rest after a photorejuvenation treatment and you can return to your usual activities as soon as you’d like. You may experience some blotchiness that may last from a few hours to a few days, and you should refrain from spending time in the sun a few days before and after the treatment.

Photo rejuvenation usually involves multiple sessions performed about three weeks apart, and results can be long-lasting, often noticeable for at least a year.

What photo rejuvenation methods do you use?

At Iorio Plastic Surgery & Medspa, we use two types of photorejuvenation: intense pulsed light (IPL) and Levulan® Photodynamic Therapy (Levulan PDT).

Give your skin a healthy, even glow with intense pulsed light (IPL), the cutting edge in anti-aging technology. Our specially-trained team utilizes light filters to treat and improve specific signs of aging such as fine wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, red blotchiness (rosacea), and small, unwanted capillaries for maximum long-term results.

Levulan® Photodynamic Therapy (Levulan PDT) is an advanced skin treatment for sun-damaged skin with actinic keratoses (AKs) – rough scaly skin that can turn into skin cancer. Levulan Photodynamic Therapy uses a special light-activated medication that destroys actinic keratosis on the face or scalp. The topical solution is applied to the face first, and then blue light illumination targets and destroys the AK cells.
