Breast Lift

Dr. Louis Iorio performs breast lift cosmetic surgery (mastopexy) to remove excess skin and to raise, reshape, and firm the breasts and enhance the natural contour of the body to create a more youthful appearance.

Lack of skin elasticity, weight loss, pregnancy, breastfeeding, and other factors can adversely affect the firmness and shape of breasts. Over time, even the natural force of gravity can take its toll, resulting in a body shape that may leave you dissatisfied or that may exaggerate your actual age.

A breast lift may be combined with breast augmentation to add more volume and create fuller breasts.

What is a breast lift?

A breast lift, also known as a mastopexy, is a type of breast surgery that helps to lift and reshape sagging breasts. Women’s skin elasticity usually decreases with age, resulting in breasts losing their firmness and natural shape. Dr. Louis Iorio of Iorio Plastic Surgery & Medspa in Colts Neck and Brick, New Jersey specializes in breast lifts that can raise the breasts and help them look more like they used to.

What are the benefits of a breast lift?

There are many benefits to having a breast lift, including:

  • Alleviating breast sagging due to aging and gravity
  • Firming the breasts, which may have lost shape after pregnancy and breastfeeding
  • Realigning a woman’s nipples/areolas if they point down or sideways
  • Restoring the breast’s original suppleness after a woman loses weight

How is a breast lift performed?

At Iorio Plastic Surgery & CosMedical Center, a breast lift usually takes 1 1/2 to 3 hours. Recent innovations in breast lift techniques include minimal incision techniques and nipple sensation reducing procedures.

The most common breast lift technique is to make an anchor-like incision along the underside of the breast, which goes around the area where skin will be removed. This defines where the nipple will be relocated. After Dr. Iorio removes the excess skin, the nipple and areola are moved into a higher position, and the skin surrounding the areola is brought down and together to reshape the breast.

If you have smaller breasts and less sagging, you may be a candidate for a breast lift procedure that uses fewer incisions such as a doughnut (or concentric) mastopexy, in which Dr. Iorio makes circular incisions around the areola and a doughnut-shaped area of skin is removed.

Some patients may choose to have breast augmentation along with the breast lift, in which case Dr. Iorio will place the implant in a pocket directly under the breast tissue or under your chest wall muscle. Other patients may opt for a breast reduction along with breast lift surgery.

What happens after a breast lift?

The highly trained staff at Iorio Plastic Surgery & Medspa will give you specific instructions for post-surgery care after your breast lift. But generally, we will advise you to get plenty of rest and to reduce your movement to limit the recovery time and speed the healing process.

We will apply bandages to the area immediately after surgery to help in healing and to minimize movement. After the bandages are removed, you will need to wear a specialized surgical bra for several weeks. If you experience any pain after your breast lift surgery, we can prescribe oral medication.

The results of your breast lift will be immediately visible after the surgery and can be maintained with regular exercise and a balanced diet.
