Breast Reconstruction

Louis Iorio is a plastic surgeon in Colts Neck and Brick, New Jersey who practices quality, compassionate care and understands the importance of breast and nipple reconstruction after mastectomy.

Today, there are several options for breast reconstruction, including fat redistribution and breast implants. Advances in technology allow cosmetic surgeons to reconstruct breasts that appear and feel natural. During your initial consultation, Dr. Iorio will listen to your concerns and discuss breast and nipple reconstruction options that are appropriate for you.

Reasons for Breast Reconstruction

At Iorio Plastic Surgery & Medspa, Dr. Louis Iorio performs breast reconstruction surgery after complete or partial removal of the breast for cancer, or less commonly, for benign (non-cancerous) disease. Women may choose breast reconstruction if they have had a new diagnosis of breast cancer and will be undergoing a complete mastectomy; if they have had a mastectomy defect from previous surgical treatment of breast cancer; or if there is a breast deformity following a lumpectomy procedure (partial removal of the breast).

When and whether to have breast reconstruction can depend on whether you choose to undergo surgery at the time of breast removal or after recovery from breast cancer; your breast size and body type; and whether you may be undergoing more breast cancer treatment, such as chemotherapy or radiation. Dr. Iorio will schedule a personal consultation to discuss the procedure and timing that make the most sense for you.

Advantages of Breast Reconstruction following Mastectomy

If breast reconstruction is done at the same time as breast removal (immediate reconstruction), replacement of the breast shape and form ensures you don’t have to live with a mastectomy defect and can help you psychologically with your recovery from cancer.

Other women choose to focus first on the treatment of their breast cancer after diagnosis and to undergo breast reconstruction after treatment is completed. Either way, it is never too late to consider reconstruction after breast removal.

How is Breast Reconstruction Performed?

At Iorio Plastic Surgery & Medspa, Dr. Iorio performs breast reconstruction using either your own tissue or implants, or sometimes both. If your own tissue is used, skin and fat will be taken from your abdominal area and transferred to the breast, resulting in a more natural appearance.

If implants are used for your breast reconstruction, Dr. Iorio will place a partially filled expander or temporary implant in the breast. Over 2 to 4 months, we will fill the expander to the desired volume, and then replace it with a silicone or saline breast implant in a second operation. This type of breast reconstruction is similar to breast augmentation in that your breasts will have a perkier look.

Recovery after Breast Reconstruction

Depending on the type of breast reconstruction you have, the recovery process can last from about 3 to 10 weeks. If you undergo breast reconstruction using your own tissue, recovery may take longer because surgery occurs at more than one site on your body. If you choose an implant, recovery may be faster.

You may also want to have your nipple and areola reconstructed as well as a procedure for symmetry of the opposite breast with unilateral breast reconstruction. Dr. Iorio will discuss each of these procedures with you to ensure your breasts make you look and feel balanced when wearing a bra or swimsuit.
