Breast augmentation (breast enhancement) is a popular plastic surgery used to enlarge a woman’s bust line, match breasts that are unequal in size, compensate for a decrease in the breast volume after pregnancy, and restore the breast following breast surgery.
When a woman considers breast augmentation as an option to enhance her bust line – and maybe her confidence – she will have many questions. As with any invasive procedure – cosmetic or otherwise – it’s important to educate yourself beforehand so that you know what to expect. Here is what you can expect during a breast augmentation consultation.
You have decided that a breast augmentation is
Once you have decided on what procedure is best, you will discuss your medical history, to include current or past illnesses, whether you have any drug allergies or sensitivity to certain substances and what, if any, medications you are taking. That includes over-the-counter as well as prescription drugs, and supplements. You may also be asked about your alcohol use and whether you use any drugs.
Because you will be undergoing a procedure that involves cutting open and inserting a foreign object in your breasts, your surgeon needs to know about your breast health, including any recent breast scans you have had, such as mammograms, or tests, such as biopsies. Finally, your surgeon might ask about any history of breast cancer in your family.
At your consultation, you can expect a physical examination of your breasts, which will include –
· Evaluating the overall health of the breast structure and tissue.
· Taking measurements of the breast and breast area.
· Noting where the nipples and areolas (pigmented tissue surrounding the nipples) are currently placed.
· Taking photographs for reference purposes.
Breast Implant Options
You can expect to learn more about the benefits and drawbacks each type of breast implant, and which one your surgeon recommends for you. Breast implants can be saline (salt water)-filled, silicone-filled, or “gummy bear” implants that are constructed of thicker silicone that doesn’t collapse or leak. You will also discuss shape options; round implants provide a more distinct profile, while shaped implants, with more material on the bottom than on the top, allow for a more natural feel. You will also discuss new textures that could prevent the implants from rotating out of place. Talk with your medical expert to go over all the potential benefits versus drawbacks of each option.
Be Honest and Upfront
When you have your heart set on achieving a new look or creating a new silhouette, it may be hard to ask tough questions – you may not get the answer you want. That’s why it’s imperative to express any fears or concerns with your surgeon, no matter how “silly” or seemingly unimportant. Remember, a consultation is as much about you learning about the process as it is about your surgeon learning about you.
Do Your Research
The surgeon you meet with should expect questions about getting a preauthorization as well as what is and is not covered by insurance. (Your surgeon may also refer you to the practice’s insurance coordinator to answer these sorts of logistical questions.) Be sure to ask if the hospital, as well as any attending specialists, is also in
You will want to ask about timetables for recovery, and of course, what type of incisions will be made. If you are considering getting pregnant in the future, ask how that may impact the surgery; he may recommend you wait until you are finished having children.
