Breast Lift: Step by step of the procedure in Breast Surgery, Plastic Surgery.

A breast lift or mastopexy is a surgical procedure performed by a plastic surgeon to enhance the look of breasts by reshaping and lifting them. There are several reasons why you would want a breast lift. Pregnancy, childbirth, breastfeeding, weight loss, and aging can all change the way your breasts look.

Breast changes caused by loss of elasticity can make any woman feel self-conscious. Perky breasts are equated with youthfulness and attractiveness. Fortunately, you can have the ideal breasts you want once again. With the right plastic surgeon, a breast lift can restore your confidence.

If you are considering a breast lift, here’s a step-by-step of the procedure so you know what to expect.

Initial Consultation

During the initial consultation, your plastic surgeon will determine the best technique for you according to the condition of your breasts, such as the size and shape, the position of the areolas, the elasticity of the skin, and the degree of the sagging. The surgeon will give you instructions on how to prepare for the surgery and what to do on the day of the procedure. At this time, you will also discuss taking time off work and other commitments and how your mobility will be impacted temporarily as you recover.

On the Day of Breast Lift Surgery

The first step of the procedure is the administration of anesthesia. Your plastic surgeon may choose sedation or general anesthesia depending on what they determine is the better option for you. Next, they will make an incision in the breasts (somewhere along the breast contours to be discreet), remove excess skin, and proceed to tighten the supporting structures of the breasts to enhance their shape.

Your surgeon may also move the breasts higher up on the chest wall and reposition the nipple and areola for a lifted look. If you are not happy with the size of your areola, the plastic surgeon can reduce the size by excising the perimeter. Lastly, the plastic surgeon will proceed with stitching the incisions shut. The entire procedure takes anywhere from two to three hours to complete, after which you will stay in the outpatient center to be monitored for a little bit. A breast lift is an outpatient procedure, allowing you to return home on the same day to recover. Once you are conscious and stable, you can return home.

After Surgery

You will notice the changes in your breasts immediately after the procedure. However, they will be painful and tender. Some also report a feeling of numbness in the breasts. All this is normal as your breasts heal. It is usually recommended that women who are getting a breast lift take at least a week off work and avoid strenuous activities. You will be provided with pain medication while you recover. You should look out for signs of infection, such as redness, warmth, and discharge from the incisions. If you notice anything, call your surgeon immediately.

You can return to work and other activities a week or two after surgery as long as you aren’t required to do any strenuous movements. It can take six to eight weeks for you to fully recover from a breast lift surgery, after which you can return to your normal activities.
