What is gynecomastia?

Enlarged breasts in men, a condition known as gynecomastia, is more common than you think. Men may experience enlarged breasts for several reasons, including hormone imbalances, heredity, obesity, disease, certain medications, and weight gain. Male breast enlargement may begin in adolescence or occur at any age.

Gynecomastia can make some men so self-conscious that they end up avoiding certain activities. If this describes you, know that male breast reduction can help you feel better about yourself so you can fully participate in whatever activities you choose.

Breast reduction for men (reduction mammoplasty) is a cosmetic and reconstructive surgical procedure that reduces the size of the breasts. At your initial consultation, Dr. Iorio will look at your breast size, shape, skin integrity, and overall health to determine which breast reduction method is right for you. He may also order diagnostic testing to help determine if there is an underlying cause for your breast enlargement.

How is male breast reduction performed?

There are a few surgical methods for treating gynecomastia, each of which remove excess tissue and reshape the breast. During male breast reduction surgery, Dr. Iorio will remove tissue and/or fat in the breast through surgery, liposuction, or both.

If liposuction is used for male breast reduction, Dr. Iorio will insert the liposuction wand through several small incisions to loosen and vacuum excess breast tissue and/or fat. If there is excess skin and residual elasticity of the skin, he may consider excess skin removal as well. During the surgery, the nipple and dark skin surrounding it, called the areola, may need to be repositioned and reduced in size.

At the end of the male breast reduction surgery, Dr. Iorio will insert temporary drainage tubes to remove excess fluids, and then close the incisions in the skin with stitches, tape, or surgical adhesive and wrap the area with bandages.

As you heal after male breast reduction surgery, swelling can be minimized by using elastic wraps or wearing a support garment. It may also take several months for the incision lines to fade. We will also prescribe medication for any post-operative pain. Your stitches will be removed at one or more follow-up appointment(s), and we will also discuss when you can return to your regular activity levels.

The results of a male breast reduction are immediately visible and are usually permanent for many men. Male breast reduction surgery may be performed as early as adolescence, but sometimes a second surgery is needed after the breasts are fully developed.

If gynecomastia is affecting your self-esteem or quality of life, you may be a candidate for male breast reduction surgery.
