Breast augmentation (breast enhancement) is a popular plastic surgery used to enlarge a woman’s bust line, match breasts that are unequal in size, compensate for a decrease in the breast volume after pregnancy, or restore the breast following breast surgery.
Dr. Louis Iorio offers breast enhancement for women who desire fuller, more flattering breasts. During cosmetic surgery, saline or newly improved silicone breast implants are placed beneath the skin to create a beautiful proportionate contour and natural, comfortable results.
What is breast augmentation?
At Iorio Plastic Surgery & Medspa in Holmdel, Colts Neck, and Brick, NJ, we recommend breast augmentation, also known as augmentation mammoplasty, to surgically enhance a woman’s breasts when she desires a fuller profile and increased breast volume. Breast augmentation is also a common procedure for breast cancer patients to help rebuild the breasts during breast reconstruction.
Though breast augmentation does result in larger breasts, the surgery will not move the breasts closer together or lift sagging breasts. Depending on your needs, we may also recommend liposuction and/or a breast lift to complement your breast augmentation surgery.
What are the benefits of breast augmentation?
Breast augmentation can help improve your body shape; increase the volume of your breasts after pregnancy and nursing; and help achieve breast symmetry if you have different breast sizes.
How is breast augmentation performed?
During breast augmentation, Dr. Iorio will insert implants into the breasts through small incisions. The procedure is generally performed while you are under general anesthesia, and it lasts about 1 to 2 hours.
The breast implant is most frequently inserted through an incision in the lower part of the breast, though it may also be inserted around the areola (the darker skin surrounding the nipple). Dr. Iorio will discuss the best breast augmentation method for you during your consultation prior to surgery.
During surgery, your breast tissue will be raised to create an open pocket under the tissue or beneath the chest wall muscle. Dr. Iorio will insert an implant behind each breast, which can increase your breast size by one or more bra cups. These implants usually contain either a saline solution or a silicone gel. What happens after breast augmentation?
We will give you specific instructions to follow after your breast augmentation surgery, but generally we will recommend getting plenty of rest and reducing your movement to speed the healing process and reduce recovery time.
After having a breast augmentation, you’ll need to wear a specialized surgical bra for several weeks, and we’ll prescribe oral pain medication to help with any discomfort. Though it may take up to five months for swelling to heal, most patients may go back to work within one week of their surgery.
