Before you undergo your breast augmentation procedure, Dr. Iorio will discuss your breast implant options and answer any questions you might have so you can decide which type of implant will be best for your unique needs and desired appearance.
There are two basic types of breast implants: silicone or saline. Both are composed of an outer shell, which may be either textured or smooth. Both are available in various sizes to create the desired look and feel of natural breasts. The main difference lies in the contents of the implants.
Silicone Breast Implants
Silicone implants contain a thick silicone gel material that tends to mimic the feel of natural body fat. If the implant leaks, the gel may stay inside the shell or it may seep into the breast implant pocket, but it will not collapse. Silicone implants are FDA-approved for augmentation in women age 22 or older.
The gummy bear breast implant is another type of silicone implant. It is so named because the gel is thicker and firmer than traditional silicone gel implants. It is capable of maintaining its shape even when the implant shell is broken.
If you choose silicone implants, Dr. Iorio may recommend routine follow-up visits with an ultrasound or MRI to assess their condition.
Saline Breast Implants
Saline implants are filled with a salt-water solution that can either be pre-filled or filled during the surgical implantation procedure. If the implant leaks, it will collapse and the saline will be absorbed and naturally expelled by the body.
Saline breast implants provide a uniform shape, firmness, and feel. They are FDA-approved for augmentation in women age 18 or older.
