Hair Restoration

What are the signs of hair loss?

There is increased hair in your brush or on your pillowcase, you notice patches of thinning or missing hair, you begin to see your scalp, your ponytails are smaller, or your hair begins to break off.

What are the causes of hair loss?

Hair loss can be caused by age, genetics, illness, hormones, medications, diet or stress.

What should I do if I am experiencing hair loss?

If you feel your hair loss is due to your age or genetics, schedule a consultation with Dr. Iorio to begin receiving help.  If your hair loss is due to a change in your health, you should contact your medical doctor for a diagnosis and treatment. Afterwards, you should pursue a hair restoration consultation to regain hair loss.

SCALP & HAIR CARE PRODUCTS

The scalp is the soft tissue layers on the top of your head covering the cranium. It houses the hair follicles, hair roots, capillaries, glands and tiny muscles. Scalp buildup can cause hair loss if left untreated, and the dead skin, oil, and sweat clog the hair follicles. The scalp should be kept clean so it can absorb ingredients to slow or prevent hair loss.

Your hair strands are made of keratin, not living cells. The hair strands can be strengthened and made thicker with proteins and collagen making your hair look fuller.

Shampoos, conditioners, and other topical products contain ingredients such as proteins, DHT blockers, caffeine, and other elements that can help stop hair loss, promote hair regrowth, and thicken hair strands. These products will be reviewed in your consultation.

VITAMINS AND SUPPLEMENTS

Nutrition and diet play an important role in hair health. Although the cells of the hair that you can see and touch are dead, the hair follicle and area of hair beneath the skin are very much alive.  Those cells receive nutrients from the blood in your blood vessels. Your blood needs to have plenty of nutrients and oxygen to deliver to the cells.

There are holistic options that can help increase nutrition to the cells and prevent or lessen hair loss. Supplements such as vitamins and minerals will be discussed during your consultation, as well as your diet and lifestyle.

LOW LEVEL LIGHT THERAPY

Low Level Light Therapy (LLLT) also known as red light therapy, targets hair follicles increasing nutrient and oxygen delivery and energizing those follicles which have been weakened.  This stimulates the hair to grow fuller, denser, and stronger.

This treatment is performed in the convenience of your own home and is available for both men and women. LLLT is cleared by the FDA and has no side effects.  If the Low Level Light Therapy is the right choice, you will have the opportunity to experience a treatment during your consultation.

MEDICAL TREATMENTS

MEDICATIONS

FDA-approved medications can provide excellent benefits for those who are beginning to experience hair loss. Two well known medications are Rogaine and Propecia.

Rogaine, also know as minoxidil, is available for both men and women. It comes in the form of a foam or a solution which is applied to the scalp. This medication reverses miniaturization of the hair follicle.

Propecia is by prescription only and is for men beginning to notice male patterned hair loss.  Also known as finasteride, Propecia is an oral medication that blocks the activity of enzymes that converts testosterone into a chemical that causes hair follicles to shrink.

If you are the right candidate, Dr. Iorio will discuss these medications with you at your consultation.

PLATELET RICH PLASMA (PRP)

Platelet Rich Plasma is obtained by drawing blood from your arm and then spinning the blood in a device called a centrifuge.  The spinning separates the components of the blood.  The plasma from the blood along with the platelets are the valuable components. They are placed into a syringe and either injected into the scalp area with thinning hair, or introduced to the surgical site during hair transplant surgery.

In addition to the platelets, Platelet Rich Plasma contains growth factors which aid in wound healing and possibly hair growth. PRP has been used in many areas of medicine such as tendon repair, osteoarthritis, and dental work.

HAIR TRANSPLANT

Hair transplant surgery is performed to restore hair in areas that have thinning hair or full loss of hair. The procedure involves removing hair-bearing scalp from a donor site and using them as grafts to be relocated to other areas. The scalp grafts are obtained using the following different methods. Based upon your needs, Dr. Iorio will recommend the method which will give you the maximum result and the least discomfort.

DONOR AREA

FOLLICULAR UNIT TRANSPLANTATION (FUT)

Using this method to obtain the hair follicles, a narrow, linear strip of scalp from the back of the head is numbed and surgically removed by Dr. Iorio, board certified general surgeon and plastic surgeon. Using his plastic surgery experience, Dr. Iorio uses fine sutures to close the incision. This will likely minimize the scar after healing occurs. With the use of a microscope, the donor area is then meticulously dissected into individual follicular grafts which contain natural hair bundles ranging from 1 to 4 hairs.

FOLLICULAR UNIT EXTRACTION (FUE)

Follicular Unit Extraction uses a core drill which removes a clean core of approximately 1 millimeter of tissue with the hair follicle located in the center.  Loupes, commonly called magnifying glasses, are worn by the provider so that the drill parallels the direction of the hairs. For those who have multi-directional hair strands, the core drill can easily be moved to mirror the direction of the hair. Each hair follicle which is already separated will contain hair bundles consisting of 1 to 4 hairs. No sutures are required, and no linear scar is created.

ARTAS 1

ARTAS (Robot-Assisted)

The ARTAS robotic hair restoration device uses Artificial Intelligence algorithms to obtain precise results. Using advanced, 3D image-guided robotics, ARTAS first analyzes the donor area and identifies the best follicles for your hair transplant surgery. This state-of-the-art system and surgeon-controlled medical device utilizes a simple punch method to extract the hair follicles one by one, meaning no stitches and no linear scar. Each hair follicle typically contains natural hair bundles ranging from 1 to 4 hairs. This robotic method enables greater precision and speed when the donor hairs are uni-directional.

RECIPIENT

RECIPIENT SITES

The placement of the hair follicles remains the same no matter which extraction method is used. Dr. Iorio determines the size of the follicle grafts and then precisely calibrates an instrument to make the sites.  He will follow the hairline design and recipient area agreed upon. The incisions must be made in the proper direction and pattern to give a natural result which is why Dr. Iorio takes his time when performing this critical step.

OTHER OPTIONS

There are other options if you are hesitant to pursue the above methods for hair loss or when you want to give your previous treatments a boost. These options will also enhance your current hair appearance.

SCALP MICRO-PIGMENTATION (SMP)

Scalp micro-pigmentation is a non-surgical, medical grade procedure in which a microneedle is used to insert pigment into each hair follicle.  Several treatments are required to obtain the desired color and density.

Scalp micro-pigmentation mimics real hair. For men, scalp micro-pigmentation results in the appearance of a freshly shaved head. For some men and women, micro-pigmentation is used to give a more dense look to their current hair. Scalp micropigmentation is also used to cover scars on the scalp from previous hair transplant surgery or an accident.

If you are interested in scalp micropigmentation, Dr. Iorio can help you determine the color, density, and hairline that would give the most natural looking result.

HAIR FIBERS

Hair fibers are lightweight, teeny tiny fibers made of keratin proteins. They come in multiple colors to match your hair. The fibers are easy to apply to thinning hair areas or balding spots.  Because the hair is also made of keratin, the fibers cling to the hair stands or lay on the scalp mimicking hair density.

Hair fibers are easy and quick to use.  Just shake them on the troubled areas and continue with your day.  The hair fibers are easily removed with a simple hair washing.
